Francois Gaultier's factory made painted porcelain doll heads and parts in the factory which he opened in 1860. The porcelain was of very high quality and he was one of the most important figures in the doll world at that time. His dolls were very popular and sold very well. He did not produce doll bodies - which explains why his doll heads are found on bodies made by a variety of manufacturers. For the first 10 years, the heads were unmarked. Starting in 1870, the heads were marked "F.G." or "F.G." along with a number. Later on there was a border around the mark.. In 1880 his two sons took over the business, and although they did win some awards, the doll heads during this period are not of the same quality. Competition from other countries eventually forced them to join S.F.B.J.
