In 1842, Pierre Francois Jumeau and M. Belton opened a doll shop in Paris, producing fashion dolls. There were no porcelain heads available at that time, so it is assumed that the doll heads were made of wood, wax or papier mache. Jumeau heads of this period were all marked. They received a bronze medal in the Paris Exhibition in 1844. The beautiful clothing was mentioned by the jury - but nothing about the heads.
Belton and Jumeau separated in 1846, and Jumeau continued the business alone. He won a bronze medal that year from the National Exhibition of Industry in Paris. Natalie Rondot reported in 1849 that "The leather doll is produced in Paris with such beautiful work, good taste and of good value, that they are exported to all countries of the world." Jumeau went on to receive a silver medal at the World's Fair in Paris - again for elegant style and good taste.
Jumeau began to advertise procelain head dolls after 1860. He must have purchased these heads from othere companies..most likely Gaultier or from Germany ...until he began producing his own heads in 1873. Up till this point, his awards and success were based on his exquisite doll fashions.
The clothing was produced primarily by home workers until he opened his own shop around 1880.
The gold medal was received by his son Emile Jumeau in 1878. The award was given for not only the quality of the clothing, but also for the porcelain head. At this time, however, the age of the fashion doll was coming to an end because of the popularity of the bebe.
