READINGS TO START WITH
The Web -- Teaching Zack to Think
Written by Alan November September 1998 for The High School Principal Magazine. Old yes - but we still see students and adults as naive as Zack. Worth reading, so you understand how ESSENTIAL it is to teach evaluation skills, so that students don't fall for bogus information. Useful for elementary, middle school, and high school teachers.
Parody Web site fools two into visiting Mankato
Letting Go of Boolean Operators: Rethinking How Research Is Taught in Schools | ALA TechSource
An excellent article on rethinking the way we design projects and teach search skills.
Hoax Buster Sites
Snopes
This is the standard site for determining cyberhoaxes and scams.
FactCheck.org
This is a good place to check on factual information - particularly political statements. Hmmmm....Factual and Political in the same sentence. Seems like an oxymoron to me ;-)

"Juried" Web Search Engines
These sites only give sites that have been pre-approved as being reliable. Still not a perfect solution since they will bring up sites such as Think.org, which is a competition for student created websites. But...you are less likely to run across the truly deceptive web pages.
Infotopia
Links only to sites approved by educators. Bonus: The site uses google search technology and therefore presents results in a format known and loved by kids everywhere ;-)
SweetSearch
"Every Web site in SweetSearch has been evaluated by our research experts."

bias, provides guidelines for evaluating research and data quality, and describes

Evaluating Websites
This would be especially good for the college bound. It is done in an Q&A format with the questions coming from a beginning college student, and the answers coming from a professor or librarian.
