LESSON PLAN
NOTE: This is the beginnings of a lesson plan. I did not have the opportunity to teach it before I retired.
General Ideas for the lesson(s):
Materials/Resources:
Instruction/Whole Class Activity:
Demonstrate Evaluation Using These Sites:Caution - the RYT hospital site should definitely not be given to kids to evaluate. Just use it as a demo. One of the pages is a blog and has "comments" on it that are actually blog spam links to all sorts of highly inappropriate sites. Just the titles alone will make your hair stand on end. But it is a great hoax site to demonstrate, because it looks so slick. If you have a filter - there is not really a worry of kids getting to the inappropriate sites - plus it would take a lot of digging to get to the page with the inappropriate links - still.... beware. And definitely not for younger than high school.

NOTE: This is the beginnings of a lesson plan. I did not have the opportunity to teach it before I retired.
General Ideas for the lesson(s):
- Teach some techniques
- Have the kids work in groups of 3 to decide real, not dependable, or ouright hoax by filling out an evaluation form.
- Once they are done with that - kids will share their results, evaluation methods etc.
- Next I can teach them about a few web sites that will help them make the decision when they are just not sure.
- Include an element of mystery and competition into it.
Materials/Resources:
- Evaluation Criteria
- Web Evaluation Checklist for High School
- Web Evaluation Checklist for Elementary & Middle School
Instruction/Whole Class Activity:
- Distribute the evaluation checklist and talk about the criteria
- Use the RYT hospital site as an example and have kids fill out the checklist along with me

Small Group Activity:
- Divide students into groups of 3
- Each group completes evaluation sheets for each site. They must work together and decide together - so only give out one checklist at a time. Each grouping includes a site that is a good to excellent site, a poor or barely average site, and an outright hoax site.
- When each group finishes, they need to see me so I can assess how they have done.
