FAIRY TALE DOLLS
Introduction | Nursery Rhyme Dolls | FairyTale Dolls | Comic Strip Dolls | Children's Story Books | Bibliography
The history of fairy tales is as long as it is fascinating. Like Nursery Rhymes, they are also full of gruesome events meant to warn students of “stranger danger” and to teach children life lessons of all sorts. Although magic is frequently present, the heroes and heroines often solve their problems or escape predicaments through their own determination. If you think about it, these stories provide a safe way to try out “what if” scenarios. Most fairy and folk tales were created for adults, not children. Through the centuries, some of the scarier bits of these tales have been removed to make them more suitable to children. Now that my daughter has her own child she is a bit horrified to read the versions I read to her as a child. Disney has certainly taken fairy tales and “prettied” them up, but at least they are preserving many of these traditional tales. Women can be credited for keeping these tales alive. They were often created with strong female characters, as women spent more time together imagining a world where women had as much power as men. Fairy AND folk tales are truly ancient world-wide stories. `The basic Cinderella story can be found all over the world. Disney got it right in their version of Beauty and the Beast: “Tale as old as time, Song as old as rhyme, Beauty and The Beast.” (Disney) (McGee, Scott)
